升降机的驱动心脏是电动葫芦，电动葫芦减速机和钢丝绳卷筒（或环链）为一体的小型起重设备，大多数还带有行走小车，配合单梁桥式或门式起重机，组成一个完整的起重机械。
电动葫芦的主体，是钢丝绳卷筒居中，一端是电动机，通过中间的转动轴，将动力传递到另一端的减速机，减速机带动卷筒（或环链）钢丝绳起重，电动葫芦提升机，只有一根钢丝绳，很容易断裂，很不安全 。
传菜电梯是曳引机就是电梯的心脏，电梯能够上下，就是靠曳引机拖动。其工作原理为，曳引机上有个驱动曳引轮，轮上有钢丝绳，绳的一端是传菜电梯轿厢，另一端是配重，曳引机拖动着钢丝绳，钢丝绳连着电梯轿箱，曳引机带着钢丝绳上上下下。传菜电梯至少有两根钢丝绳，安全系数很高。
